By: Warren Mayes

The St. Louis Rams National 7-on-7 Team finished second last year and this year the squad of 18 local high school football players will attempt to win it all.

Team will be coached by St. Louis Rams manager of fan development Kyle Eversgerd and Rams Training Academy Coach Matt Biermann. The Lineman Challenge participants will be coached by St. Louis Rams youth football ambassador Mike Gohn, who is retiring as the athletic director for the Parkway school district.

The 2014 NFL 7-on-7 National Tournament and Lineman Challenge will be hosted by the Indianapolis Colts. Various events are scheduled throughout the week at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, the Indianapolis Colts practice facility.

The team departs at 9:30 a.m. Sunday (July 13) from Rams Park for Indianapolis. The 7-on-7 pool play at the Indianapolis Colts facility begins Monday. On Tuesday, the single-elimination tournament and finals will be held.

The Lineman Challenge activities will be Wednesday with character development with NFL Ambassador and Thursday will be community service and the Lineman Challenge.

Members of the 7-on-7 team in alphabetical order are: Tony Adams, St. Louis University High; Tre’ Bryant, CBC; Sam Frelich, Chaminade; Reggie Guynn, Maplewood; Cameron Hilton, Webster Groves; Perri Johnson Jr., St. Louis University High; Griffin Palmer, De Smet; Cameron Price, Hazelwood Central; Cole Sigmund, MICDS; Sutton Smith, Francis Howell; Nick Sprague, Parkway South; and Eric Williams, Carnahan High.

As part of the Rams commitment to youth football, the club partnered with the National Football League to host a High School Player Development Camp at Gateway STEM High School.  Additionally, the St. Louis Rams supported the 2014 St. Louis Metro Football Coaches Association 7-on-7 tournament.

All players from the camp and the tournament were eligible for selection to represent the St. Louis Rams at the NFL 7-on-7 High School Player Development National Tournament and in the Lineman Challenge. The Rams youth football staff and Rams Training Academy instructors selected the 18 athletes from a group of nearly 650 student athletes. Selections were based on character, leadership and football skills.

In 2010, the St. Louis squad finished eighth in the 7-on-7 tournament. In 2012, the Rams finished with an 8-1 record and were eliminated in the second round of the single elimination tournament. In 2013, the Rams made it to the NFC championship game where they lost to the eventual tournament champion Detroit Lions squad.

The Rams are one of 32 NFL teams competing in the 2014 7-on-7 tournament.
