Cusumano is tied for lead after two rounds of the Metropolitan Open

By: Warren Mayes

St. Louis’ Alex Cusumano has a share of the lead Friday (July 11) after two rounds of the ninth annual Metropolitan Open.

Cusumano shot a 68 and sits at 135 in the tournament being played at The Country Club of St. Albans. He is tied with two professionals — Jace Long, of Columbia; and Chris Thompson, of Lawrence, Kan.

Cusumano, a Loyola of Chicago graduate, shot 3-under on this front 9. That included an eagle 2 at the par 4 fifth, “a little chip in from just off the green about 25 feet” said Cusumano.

He is looking forward to Saturday’s final round.

“Tomorrow is going to be a lot of fun, regardless of what happens,” Cusumano said.

Thompson, who  played in the 2013 US Open at Merion Golf Club, had the low round of the championship thus far with a 5-under 65 in the second round.

Thompson finished in tie for second last year in the Metropolitan.

“After playing in 2013, I put this event on my calendar at the beginning of the year,” Thompson said.  “I love this golf course, it is a really good test.  You have to hit all kinds of shots, it’s wide enough, but you get penalized with bad shots.”

Long, who turned pro last year after graduating from Missouri,  shot a 4-under 66 including 5 birdies.  His second round pleased Long.

“Today was pretty consistent, you have to hit solid and straight … a tough place to get around,”  Long said.

Thompson and Long will be in the final pairing Saturday.

Saturday’s final round will begin at 7 a.m.  The final pairing of Thompson and Long will begin their round at 10:20 a.m.
