A week ago the River City Rascals clinched a playoff berth and on Thursday night the Rascals clinched the Frontier League West Division title thanks to a 9-2 pounding of the Florence Freedom in Florence, Ky.
The division crown is the third title in River City history.
River City came out blazing as the Rascals pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning to put Florence in a rough spot.
Brian McConkey and Hector Crespo each knocked in runs off Florence starter Michael O’Neal. McConkey knocked in two runs with a double and Crespo singled home McConkey for the third run and a quick 3-0 lead.
On the mound, Tim Koons turned in outstanding effort for the Rascals. The righthander went six innings, gave up just five hits, struck out six, and walked just one batter.
In the fifth, River City broke it open with a five-run rally. Steve Carillo brought home Jon Meyers on a squeeze bunt and singled home a pair of runs to key the big inning.
Florence managed to get a pair of unearned runs off Nick Kennedy in the seventh. The Rascals were unfazed and scored again in the eighth and reliever Gabriel Shaw pitched a three up-three down ninth to clinch River City’s 61st win of the year, and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
River City will open the division series on Monday (Sept. 8) against the lowest remaining seed after the one-game wild card round games are played this weekend.
