Fort Zumwalt South topples defending Class 3 champ St. Dominic in sectional

The Fort Zumwalt South soccer team made a historic breakthrough on Tuesday night (Nov. 4).

Thanks to a determined, hard-nosed effort from beginning to end, the Bulldogs upended defending two-time Class three champion St. Dominic 3-0 at St. Dominic.

It was Zumwalt South’s first sectional victory in four appearances, and the Bulldogs (18-6-1) now move on to host Ladue (20-4-1) ┬áSaturday in a quarterfinal round game.

Ladue shut out Westminster Christian 2-0 Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs came out aggressive on the ball in the opening half and took the lead midway through the first half.

Zumwalt South sophomore Michael Wade scored the first goal off a nice cross-field pass from Joey Spotanski.

Just before the end of the half, the Bulldogs struck again as Wade set Spotanski up with a shot off a long throw in near the goal and Spotanksi popped the ball in for a 2-0 lead.

A little under 12 minutes into the second half, Zumwalt South tacked on another goal as South’s Drew Heck played a free-kick into the goal box for Wade, who got a re-directed header for the Bulldogs final goal of the day.

Senior goalkeeper Drew Orf stood tall between the pipes as he posted the shutout.

St. Dominic, which was seeking its third consecutive state title, finished at 13-10-1.
