Howell Central gets payback, beats Timberland in sectional round

Francis Howell Central had its soccer season ended at the hands of Timberland in a penalty-kick shootout loss in the Class 4 quarterfinals a season ago. The Spartans had been longing for a possible rematch with the Wolves since then.

On Wednesday, the Spartans got their long-awaited chance and made the most of it, posting a 2-0 win at Liberty High.

Howell Central (21-4-1), which won its fourth straight sectional crown, moves on to play host to Marquette in a Class 4 quarterfinal Saturday at 1 p.m.

Neither team was able to generate much offense in the first half as the clubs battled to a scoreless tie.

The Spartans hit the posts on two point-blanks scoring chances in the opening half and Timberland (15-13)  narrowly missed on an opportunity as well.

In the second half, the Spartans pumped in both of their goals.

At just under thirty minutes into the second half, Howell Central midfielder Ryan Hutson put the Spartans on the board thanks to a goal on a booming shot that blazed past Timberland senior goalkeeper Brendan Willie for a 1-0 lead.

Howell Central keeper Richard Webert turned in an outstanding effort in-goal as Webert made easy and tough saves to keep Timberland off the scoreboard.

Webert, picked up the win in-goal and recorded 21st win of the season and his ninth solo shutout. Willis suffered the loss for Timberland.

The win brings the Spartans a rematch with Marquette. Howell Central knocked off Marquette 1-0 back on Oct. 23.

With the sectional win, Howell Central went to 3-0 for the season in games between the clubs as the Spartans blanked the Wolves in the first two contests.
