CBC’s big win is first for school, coach

CBC celebrates its Class 6 state championship win.

Winning a state football championship has not changed CBC coach Scott Pingel.

It was the first title for CBC and Pingel. The Cadets rallied to defeat perennial power Rockhurst 31-24 and capture the Class 6 championship at the Edward Jones Dome.

The victory capped an undefeated season for CBC at 14-0, making the Cadets the first St. Louis team to win the top football class since Hazelwood Central in 2009.

“I’ve not changed at all,” Pingel said. “It’s a humbling experience.”

Pingel said he was most excited for the school.

“It’s neat to get one for CBC,” he said. “This win erases out zero for a championship in football. That alone makes it pretty awesome.”

CBC has won state championships in basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer and track and field.

CBC was runner-up in football in 2006 and 2011. Pingel was the offensive coordinator in 2006 and the head coach in 2011. Now, he is the coach of a state champion.

“I’m getting used to it. It sounds good,” he said. “The guys are very excited about winning. To experience the game and see in the hallways at school how excited and happy everyone is makes it all special.

“Without a doubt, we got a lot of great support from the students, administration, teachers and other sports teams and coaches this season.”

Pingel is someone who appreciates his position.

“It’s pretty special to be a high school coach,” Pingel said.
