Joe Patterson, headmaster of Andrews Academy in Creve Coeur, has announced his intention to retire, effective Sept. 1.

Patterson, a graduate of Washington University, started his career in 1963 as a teacher and assistant headmaster of Community School, a private elementary school in Ladue.

Following a 10-year term of service at Community School, he was named headmaster of Whitfield School. During his 10-year tenure at Whitfield he initiated a building program and built the school’s enrollment.

In 1983, he was named the first headmaster of Andrews Academy, and during his 35-year career there, the school grew exponentially and became one of the largest private elementary schools in St. Louis.

In 2006, Patterson was asked to start and lead a new Andrews Academy in the city of Lake Saint Louis simultaneously with the Creve Coeur school. The Lake Saint Louis school now is located in a stately new building continuing the tradition of the Creve Coeur campus by preparing children for entrance into exceptional secondary schools.

In announcing his retirement, Patterson asked, “How many people are fortunate enough to have been in a profession they love for 54 years!”
