Book Battle produces literary stars

Book Battle’s first-place team, Rockwood South Middle.

Forty-two middle school teams battled it out literary style at the 12th Annual Area-Wide Middle School Book Battle held at Pattonville Heights Middle on May 3. Coming out on top as the first-place winner was Rockwood South Middle, who edged out third-place winner Parkway Southwest Middle by two points. Finishing in the top 20 was Parkway West Middle [tied for fourth place], Parkway South Middle [tied for seventh place] and The Fulton School at St. Albans [17th place].

The Book Battle gives middle school students the opportunity to meet and discuss current books of interest. The Area-Wide Book Battle Committee creates a list of books, which includes a variety of genres and reading levels. The committee develops questions for each book that are formatted so each answer is the title and author of a book on the list. Some of the questions are fairly obvious, while others require a deeper understanding of the book. In addition, more difficult questions in challenge rounds and tiebreakers require team members to provide details from the books.
