Sixth- through eighth-grade students from Barat Prep recently held a “Hearty Meals for the Homeless” canned food drive as part of the school’s “WE Scare Hunger” and “WE Won’t Rest” campaigns.
Students worked in groups to research topics related to homelessness and food insecurity and its impact on children in the St. Louis area.
Barat Prep also hosted a guest speaker who was able to tell personal stories of the men she works with and described their needs, putting a face on the problem of homelessness.
Students made posters advertising the “Hearty Meals for the Homeless” canned food drive and hung them up around school, and they sent emails to their friends and family asking for donations. In the end, they collected over 300 cans of food, which were donated to the homeless outreach program at Memorial Boulevard Christian Church.
The season of giving continued on St. Nicholas Day [Dec. 6] when students brought in canned food donations to support the Oasis Pantry in St. Charles County, where about one-third of Barat students reside.
