Maliyah was accidentally killed on Friday, Dec. 14, when her 12-year-old brother discovered a 9 mm handgun in a dresser in his parent’s bedroom while they were away at a Christmas party. A 16-year-old sister was watching the younger children at the time.
The family lives in Florrisant. In a press statement, Florissant Police Chief Timothy Lowery, said: “You couldn’t have written a more tragic script, the whole thing is just so tragic and terrible, but we have to put our personal feelings aside and do the law enforcement side of this,” Lowery said.

No charges have been filed at this time; however, under Missouri law, it is possible that the parents could be charged with endangering the welfare of a child [first-degree], which is a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
