Parkway Southwest Middle comes out on top of book annual battle

By: Bonnie Krueger

Parkway Southwest Middle bested last year’s placement by coming in first in the Area-Wide Middle School Book Battle.

Thirty-eight middle school teams battled it out literary style at the 13th Annual Area-Wide Middle School Book Battle held at Pattonville Heights Middle on May 2. The first-place winner was Parkway Southwest Middle. Other local schools that finished in the top 20 included Parkway West Middle [#13], Rockwood South Middle [#15] and Parkway Central Middle [#17].

The book battle gives middle school students the opportunity to discuss current books of interest. The committee creates a list of books that vary in genres and reading levels, then develops a list of questions for each book that are formatted so each answer is the title and author of a book on the list. Challenge rounds and tiebreaker questions required team members to provide details from the books. All questions are kept secret at Remington Traditional School throughout the book battle process and only members of the Area-Wide Book Battle Committee have access to them. Remington Traditional committee members select the final questions.

Scholastic Books, Main Street Books in St. Charles and the St. Louis County Library all sponsor the event.
