Dancers of all ages and skill levels will find a home at the Saint Louis Ballet School. Registration is open now online, and classes begin August 5.

Administrator Tanya Strautmann, who danced professionally with St. Louis Ballet for 16 years, praised the art as something that “helps you in your entire life.”

“It teaches you a discipline, how to achieve certain goals,” Tanya said. “Most students in ballet class are actually doing really well in school, because they have that discipline in ballet class. Every day you’re coming in and doing the same steps over and over again, but you’re getting better and then you continue building on that foundation.”

Saint Louis Ballet School is the educational branch of the Saint Louis Ballet. Students learn from professionals and may audition in September for the Saint Louis Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker performed at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of UMSL.

Classes include Mommy/Daddy & Me [age 2], Pre-Ballet [ages 3-5] and Ballet 1-8 [age 6-high school], plus tap, jazz, hip hop and contemporary.
For adults wishing to rekindle an old talent or learn a new one, SLBS offers a few levels of ballet and tap, plus a new Adult Jazz Class. All adults have the convenience of a drop-in rate or class card.

SLBS also features private music lessons in piano, flute, violin and viola. Parents with dancers and musicians will love the convenience. Plus, studying an instrument helps dancers improve skills and engagement with music.

“Our teachers love ballet for everything it is. They don’t have to see every student become a professional,” Tanya said. “We take care of the students who want to do it as a career, and the students who just want to dance.”
