The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Blues have named a group of local performers as the 2019 winners of their joint National Anthem contest.

The winning group is a quartet of high school trombone players: Thomas Gustafson, a sophomore at Clayton High; Daniel Jung, a senior at Ladue Horton Watkins High; Geoffrey Ladue, a senior at Lafayette High; and Evan Smith, a senior at O’Fallon Township High. All are members of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.

The quartet was chosen from nearly 300 applicants. Thirty acts were invited to the finals audition in Powell Hall.

The quartet was praised for their bluesy rendition of the National Anthem, which was arranged by Gustafson, age 15.
