When Jill Umbarger started her business in 2005, Sarah’s was a small café and catering company based in Wildwood.
It didn’t take long for the café to earn its reputation as a destination for special desserts. When Sarah’s relocated to Chesterfield in 2010, as Sarah’s Cake Shop, its emphasis shifted to custom cakes, desserts and cupcakes, but Jill never lost her love of small cafés. In 2016, she opened Sarah’s On Central in Eureka and returned to her restaurant roots.
And just like Sarah’s cakes and desserts have amassed enthusiastic followers so, too, have her café creations. On the menu is a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, dinner specials and, of course, desserts and pastries at every meal.
“Plus, we offer beer and wine in Eureka,” Umbarger said. “We have some really great wines, such as an Estancia Un-Oaked Chardonnay, and locally produced, craft beers.”
Starting the day off right, Umbarger suggests: “For breakfast, one of our popular pastries is our huge cinnamon roll. On the savory side, we have our big biscuit sammies that are delicious.”
The original Big Biscuit Sammy comes with egg, sausage or bacon, and the guest’s cheese of choice. But there’s also the option to have all that goodness smothered in sausage gravy. Diners opting for a lighter, yet equally tasty breakfast can dig into the Skinny Sammy featuring egg whites, spinach, sun-dried tomato pesto and white cheddar cheese on multigrain toast. Or Protein Packed Avocado Toast, a ‘2 Hungry Neighbors’ original that combines gluten-free toast, avocado hummus and an over-easy egg dusted with sea-salt.
What are 2 Hungry Neighbors? That’s another enterprise of Umbarger that combines her love of food with her love of people. Umbarger and her neighbor, Heather Koenig, have teamed up to create healthy recipes featuring whole foods that are both nutritious and delicious. Many of those same recipes are featured on the Sarah’s On Central menu – many are gluten- and/or dairy-free.
“I just know what I like and what I want,” Umbarger explained.
In that regard, she is just like her customers, who love her Chicken Salad, packed with grapes, walnuts, chicken breast and a light dressing. “It’s delicious!” Umbarger exclaims. “And so are our quiches. I almost forgot to mention those.” The quiches change weekly so there’s always a tasty surprise waiting for guests to return.
In at Sarah’s Cake Shop, the latest change is more of a refocusing of talent.
“After 14-and-a-half years of doing custom cakes, we are no longer going to be doing custom cakes. We’ll still be doing wedding cakes and we’ll still have all of our pre-designed cakes that you can order, we just won’t be doing custom cakes,” Umbarger explained. “And of course, both locations will continue to offer Sarah’s grab-an-go favorites – Glitter Bites®, Cake Truffles, Petit Fours, Cake Pops, cupcakes and cookies. “And we’re adding cheesecake to the menu.”
With the holidays, fast approaching, Umbarger said it’s never too early to order pie and sweet treat for holiday gatherings and gift giving. “We’ll be offering five types of pies this year: Pumpkin, Apple, Pecan, French Silk [chocolate cream] and Cherry,” Umbarger said.
Customers can order any of Sarah’s sweets until about four days out from the actual holiday, but early planning is always appreciated.
