De Smet lands six players on annual MaxPreps Football all-state team

The annual MaxPreps Football all-state team and coach have been announced.

Several local football players and a coach have been honored to make the prestigious team.

The Class 6 state champion De Smet Spartans had the most area players with six in addition to having its coach recognized.

For the team’s excellence, De Smet’s Robert Steeples was selected the MaxPreps Missouri Coach of the Year.

Here are the local athletes who were named to the teams with a little information about each one:

First team
RB — Chris Kreh, Marquette, 5-11, 192, Jr. The Suburban West American Division Conference offensive player of the year rushed for 2,238 yards and 27 touchdowns on 280 carries.

OL — Josh Baker, Eureka, 6-3, 280, Sr. The two-time all-conference pick and returning all-state selection will play at Arizona next year.

DL — Mekhi Wingo, De Smet, 6-1, 280, Jr. The sack leader for the Class 6 state champions with 15 to go along with 97 tackles.

LB — Carter Edwards, De Smet, 6-1, 225, Sr. Led DeSmet in tackles with 126 and four sacks.

DB — Jakailin Johnson, De Smet, 6-1, 170, Sr. Had seven interceptions for the Class 6 champions.

P — Brady Cook, Chaminade, 6-3, 210, Sr. The top-rated quarterback in the state, according to 247 Sports, Cook threw for 2,603 yards, 28 touchdowns. Also averaged 49.3 yards per punt to lead the state.

Second team

RB — Taj Butts, De Smet, 5-11, 200, Jr. Rushed for 1,279 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Class 6 champions.

RB – Rico Barfield, De Smet, 6-0, 215, Jr. Scored 18 touchdowns and ran for 1,148 yards on 151 carries.

WR — Jordan Johnson, De Smet, 6-2, 180, Sr. Bound for Notre Dame, Johnson had 28 catches for 597 yards and nine touchdowns for the Class 6 state champions.

OL — Brady Feeney, Christian Brothers (St. Louis), 6-5, 285, Sr. A returning all-state player who is headed to play at Indiana.

OL — Bennie Anderson, Westminster Christian (St. Louis), 6-3, 275, Sr. Son of former Baltimore Raven of the same name, Anderson earned All-Metro honors.

OL — Brody Wisecarver, De Smet, 6-4, 317, Jr. Ranked as one of the top juniors in the state by 247 Sports.

DL — Michael West, CBC, 6-5, 210, Sr. The team captain had 68 tackles and six sacks.
