Give STL Day takes place Thursday, May 7

Give STL Day is an annual 24-hour online day of giving that takes place across the St. Louis region. This year, the event falls on Thursday, May 7.

Give STL Day 2020 is being spearheaded by the St. Louis Community Foundation. The Clayton-based foundation brings together private and corporate support to meet the needs of local nonprofits. On givestlday.org, more than 1,000 nonprofits are listed for ease in donating.

The St. Louis Community Foundation has been in operation since 1915.

Due to the virus outbreak, Give STL Day opened an early donation window on April 6 in light of the fact that many nonprofits are experiencing volunteer and staff shortages as a result of ongoing social distancing mandates.

Wings of Hope, a Chesterfield-based global humanitarian nonprofit organization, posted a message on its official website that the Wings of Hope will remain closed for the safety of families, patients and staff members. A release issued by CEO Bret Heinrich stated that donations from the Give STL Day will go directly toward providing specialized medical care services to individuals in need.

In addition to operational changes, the budgets of nonprofits have been affected due to the postponement or outright cancellation of many critical fundraising events and revenue-generating programs.

For example, six months before the pandemic, Turning Point set a fundraising goal of $55,000 for its annual Boots ‘n Bling event. The event was then turned into an online auction following the issuance of social distancing mandates.

The week generated about $35,000 instead of the original $55,000 but was considered a success.

“We’re thankful to serve a community that even in such challenging times is so generous,” said Tim Churchill, board chairman.

Turning Point is a nonprofit organization provides emergency shelter and services to victims of domestic and sexual violence for individuals and families in Franklin, Gasconade, Lincoln, Montgomery, Warren and St. Charles counties.

*While similar in name and concept to Give STL Day, GivingTuesday was held on May 5 and is a global unity day based around supporting nonprofits. Give STL Day is an initiative within the St. Louis region.
