Rockwood plans for student equity, opportunity and access

Executive Director of Student Services Dr. Terry Harris and Director of Education Equity and Diversity Brittany Hogan recently collaborated with Superintendent Dr. Mark Miles and staff around the district to create “The Beloved Community: Rockwood’s Path to Equity, Opportunity, and Access.”

The plan was inspired by the “universal equity, opportunity, and access” objective outlined in the district’s strategic plan, “The Way Forward.”

“The Beloved Community” is Rockwood’s plan to progress toward a goal of universal equity, opportunity and access for our district community by taking stock of what is currently offered and seeking out further opportunities for advancement.

“We’re really excited about the work we’re doing,” Hogan said. “This couldn’t be a space of talking about equity without talking about empathy and loving our kids. Everything here is about the kids and feeding into what’s best for them. The plan is rooted in empathy and powered by love.”

The plan centers on four main categories: human resources, professional learning, curriculum and access. District programs like Welcome Home Rockwood, the Early College Partnership and Partners in Education will also be included in ongoing conversations.

“Our words matter, but they’re still not enough. Our actions matter, and they can have tremendous impact,” Miles said. “This plan represents Rockwood’s way of saying and doing something.”
