Possible diabetes drug-dementia connection The National Institute on Aging recently awarded Saint Louis University researchers with a grant of $443,636 to pursue an initial study examining a potential link between a first-line diabetes drug, Metformin, and dementia risk. Currently, 30.3 million people – 9.4 percent of the U.S. population – have diabetes which requires treatment. Metformin is the most widely prescribed diabetes drug worldwide, making its potential connection to dementia especially important.
