‘Illumination’ celebrates 100 years of St. Charles Parks and Recreation

The word ‘centennial’ can be used in relation to a 100-year anniversary, or signal the end of a 100-year period. For the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department, both of these definitions apply; however, the first century is just the beginning. To celebrate the department’s 100-year birthday, the city is hosting Illumination, a three day festival (Sept. 12-14) in Frontier Park with concerts, carnival rides, 100-second games, a Model T car show and more; plus bonus concerts, food trucks and fireworks on Monday, Sept. 15. Manchester Homecoming

Watercolor exhibit features local artist   As an extension of Homecoming 2014, Manchester Arts will sponsor an exhibit featuring the work of Manchester resident Bill Vivrett, a retired educator and active artist. The show, titled “The Good Ride: A Journey into Metaphor,” includes mainly watercolors created by the lifelong teacher, mentor and student of fine arts. Spanning more than 60 years, Bill’s education and art experience includes several years of teaching English and Studio Art to middle and high school students. Pillow Platoon provides ‘sweet dreams’ to deployed families

John Stoeffler, a former Army Infantry officer who served in Korea in the mid-1960s, always has had a heart for soldiers and their families. But it is thanks to the efforts of local volunteers that he’s able to do something about it. In 2008, Stoeffler and his wife, Linda, created the Sweet Dreams Picture Pillow Project to provide comfort to children whose parents are deployed. Digital images, provided by the military families, are transferred onto muslin using a high heat press. A place for remembering pets

There is a quiet oasis in West County where people go to remember and pay tribute to their late pets. Wildwood resident Dr. Dennis Eschbach, a pet chiropractor, has had 13 pets buried over about 20 years at Memory Park Pet Cemetery, located at 1457 Boly Lane in Twin Oaks. Artists called to paint St. Charles County Parks

Attention all Missouri and Illinois artists: the St. Charles County Parks Department and the Foundry Art Centre invite you to participate in the Paint Your County Parks competition. The art contest is free to enter with a deadline of Oct. 31. The goal of the competition is to expose the area’s vibrant arts community and highlight the beauty and benefits of St. Charles County Parks. First place will receive a $1,000 purchase prize for their work. Artists may use watercolors, oils, gouache or acrylics to paint a county park scene. A glowing success

The Wildwood Business Association (WBA) recently donated $4,480 to the Wildwood YMCA, the result of the WBA’s most successful Balloon Glow event to date. The annual Holiday Balloon Glow was originally scheduled for December; however, severe weather necessitated that the event be rescheduled for April. The end result was the highest attendance in four years and also the largest donations amount raised to date to benefit the Wildwood YMCA.
