Twenty students from seven West County schools have published their historical family stories or illustrations in "Grannie Annie, Vol. 12." The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration invites students to write about something interesting they discover from their family's history, based on their interviews with older relatives.

Joyous celebration honors Parkway heroes after school bus accident

For the staff and students of Hanna Woods Elementary, superheroes came in many forms on May 11 but none of them wore capes. Uniformed first responders and men and women in street clothes came to the aid of 13 children and their bus driver, Lavitta Conrod, following an accident that sent a Voluntary Interdistrict Choice Corporation bus careening off Interstate 44. Miraculously, no one was critically injured.

Thirty-one local schools competed in the 11th annual Area-Wide Middle School Book Battle on May 4 at Pattonville Heights Middle. The Book Battle gives middle school students the opportunity to show off their literary knowledge in a question-and-answer competition.

Rockwood Drug-Free Coalition contest winners

The Rockwood Drug-Free Coalition recently announced the winners of a substance abuse prevention video/poster contest, which was open to all middle and high school youth who attend school or live in the Rockwood School District. Winning posters will be displayed throughout the community at schools, city halls, recreation centers, churches, Six Flags, on local TV stations and at the annual Rockwood art fair.

New assistant superintendent named in Parkway

Kevin Beckner has been named the Parkway School District’s assistant superintendent of teaching, learning and accountability, effective July 1 pending board approval. Beckner will replace Lisa Merideth, who is retiring after 11 years of service in Parkway and over 30 years in education.
