2019-20 high school wrestling preview capsules

Reigning state wrestling champions Whitfield and CBC will be attempting to win another title this season. The CBC Cadets won the 2019 Class 4 state wrestling tournament. It was CBC’s second consecutive crown. CBC had four individual state champions last season and two return this year. Senior Joshua Saunders is three-for-three at the state meet. Saunders earned his third championship last winter with a 10-3 decision over Staley’s Aidan Johnson at 152 pounds. The state title gave him a 40-2 season. Saunders went 34-3 as a sophomore. The Marquette Mustangs are looking to jump in the pool for the girls swimming and diving season. Marquette won the Class 2 state championship last winter with 278 points. Rock Bridge was distant second at 224.5. It was the Marquette program’s third title. The other two came in 1999 and 2000. Coach Joe Schoedel’s team went undefeated in duals and won three meets before claiming the state title. He has eight state qualifiers back. CBC’s Wehrmann breaks his school record in race at Class 2 state swim meet

CBC sophomore Max Wehrmann broke his own school record at the recent Class 2 state swimming and diving meet. Wehrmann had a second-place showing in the 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 42.32 seconds. Last fall at the state, Wehrmann set the school record in 200 freestyle with his time of 1:45.59, good for an 11th-place finish. De Smet football coach Rob Steeples has been there and done that. Now, he wants this Spartans to experience it as well. That would be winning a state championship. In his fourth season at the held, Rob Steeples has his De Smet Spartans playing for the Class 6 state football championship. Steeples was a member of De Smet’s only football championship team. The Parkway Central Colts finished third in Class 5 last winter and return four starters from that team. Coach Brian Guilfoyle is entering his 10th year at helm of the Colts, who finished 24-7 with a program-best third-place showing in the Class 4 state tournament. Parkway Central will be led by Jayla Kelly, who recently signed to play college basketball with Missouri. De Smet finds 13 is lucky number as Spartans win Class 4 state soccer championship

The third time was indeed the charm for the De Smet soccer Spartans under coach Josh Klein. After narrow misses in the Class 4 state championship game in 2015 and 2018, De Smet was determined not to be a bridesmaid again this season. The De Smet Spartans won the Class 4 state soccer championship with a victory over Lee’s Summit. It was the sixth overall state title for the program. The Chaminade swimming and diving team has added some hardware for the school’s trophy case. The Red Devils finished fourth and set two school records in the recent Class 1 state swimming and diving meet at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters. Lafayette freshman Tyson ends first girls cross country season with a medal at Class 4 state meet

Lafayette freshman Grace Tyson capped a solid first year running for the Lancers by earning a state medal. Tyson finished third in the Class 4 race at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia.
