Gabbert honored as Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, will play in bowl game

CBC graduate Brett Gabbert enjoyed a fine freshman season with the Miami RedHawks and will play in a bowl game in January. Miami University’s Brett Gabbert was named Freshman of the Year for theMid-American Conference. Gabbert completed 139-of-258 passes for 1,967 yards and 10 touchdowns, while leading the Red and White to its first MAC Championship appearance since 2010. The RedHawks claimed a 26-21 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas last week at Ford Field. Gabbert went 14-for-27 for 196 yards and a score. De Smet will celebrate undefeated state championship football team at annual banquet

The De Smet football banquet this week gives the Spartans a chance to celebrate again. The Spartans are the Class 6 state champions. De Smet (14-0) capped an undefeated season with a 35-20 victory over the previously undefeated Joplin Eagles at Faurot Field in Columbia. De Smet football coach Rob Steeples has been there and done that. Now, he wants this Spartans to experience it as well. That would be winning a state championship. In his fourth season at the held, Rob Steeples has his De Smet Spartans playing for the Class 6 state football championship. Steeples was a member of De Smet’s only football championship team. And then were three teams. Week 13 finds just three teams left playing in postseason football. There will be two Class 5 quarterfinals played Friday. Eureka (10-1) plays at Jackson (11-0) at 7 p.m. Fort Zumwalt North (11-0) travels to play at Chaminade (8-3) at 7 p.m. Last week, Eureka blanked defending state champion Vianney 36-0. Marquette seeks first district football championship in school history in playing Joplin

The Marquette Mustangs hit the road to play in the Class 6 District 3 championship football game. Marquette (10-1) will play in Joplin against the undefeated Eagles (11-0). The kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday at Junge Field. The Mustangs, who set a school record for most wins in a season this fall, have never won a district championship in the program’s history. It’s time for high school football district championship games in Week 12. In Class 6, undefeated De Smet (11-0) will entertain Francis Howell (10-1). The kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday. Last week in the District 1 semifinals, De Smet eliminated defending state champion CBC 35-14. Francis Howell scored a 42-6 win over Hazelwood Central.
