High school girls tennis

Whitfield sophomore Grace Klutke made history for the Warriors. Klutke reached the Class 1 semifinals in the state tennis meet at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. It was her first trip to the state tournament. “She is the first girl from Whitfield who has made it to state,” Whitfield coach Jill Starr said. “There was a boy, Michael Gardner, about eight years ago who made it to state.” Klutke beat Clinton’s Adriane Dehn in her opening match 6-1, 6-1. Hole in one

Manchester’s Ned Gregory waited 64 years but he said it was worth the wait. Gregory, 75, started playing golf when he was 11. He recently recorded his first hole in one. He made the hole in one Oct. 5 playing in a tournament at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. On No. 10, Gregory hit a 3-wood 192 yards. “It took me 64 years to do it,” Gregory said. “It was a great golf shot. It hit 10 or 12 feet in front of the hole. Soccer Hall of Fame inducts Chris Papagianis

The St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame recently held its 2014 Hall of Fame banquet at the America Center. Chesterfield’s Chris Papagianis, 64, was inducted for his playing career at Southwest High School and Harvard, where he also is in the Hall of Fame. The other 2014 inductees included Nick Archer, Mike Barnstead, Ed Cody Jr., Vince Drake, Austin Gomez, Carl Hutter, Mike O’Mara, Tom Pollihan, Ray Schnettgoecke and Francis Slay. Lafayette honors fallen teammate, knocks off Eureka

Noah Cook's spirit carried the Lafayette Lancers football team to higher ground Friday night at Eureka High School. Cook, a sophomore lineman on the Lafayette junior varsity team, passed away on Thursday morning and the Lancers played with heavy hearts. But that did not stop the club from honoring their teammate as they dedicated the game to his memory.

Missouri team ready to begin play in the USGA State Team Championship

The three-man Missouri team will begin competition Tuesday (Sept. 30) in the USGA’s Men’s State Team Championship. For the third consecutive time, and seventh time in the 11 playings of the championship, all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have entered a team. The average age of the competitors is 35.7 years. New York won the event in 2012. The event runs through Thurdsay at French Lick, Ind.  Opened in 2009, the par 72 Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort is a jewel. MICDS heads into district play playing some of its best golf

The undefeated MICDS Rams are on a roll heading into Tuesday’s (Sept. 30) Class 1 District 1 tournament. The Rams are 9-0 in dual and triangular matches and 2-0 in tournament play. MICDS won the Angel Classic and is coming off winning the River to River Challenge last week. Forest Hills Country Club is the site of the district, which is being hosted by Villa Duchesne. It’s time for high school girls tennis team and invidual singles and doubles districts to begin.    Here are the seedings for Class 2 District 3 hosted by St. Joseph’s Academy: 1. St. Joseph’s Academy. 2. Visitation Academy. 3. Webster Groves. 4. Nerinx Hall. 5. Ladue. 6. Gateway. Play begins Monday (Sept. 29) when Nerinx Hall plays Ladue and Webster Groves meets Gateway. It’s time for area high school girls golf teams to start district competition. The Class 2, District 2 teams will tee it up first when the teams begin playing at 8 a.m. Monday (Sept. 29) at Fox Run Golf Club. Northwest is the host. Teams competing are Eureka, Lafayette, Marquette, Northwest, Parkway South, Parkway West, Summit, Rolla, Visitation Academy and Westmisnter Christian Academy. Brister, Lewis lead Fort Zumwalt North past Fort Zumwalt South

The stage was big for Fort Zumwalt North sophomore quarterback Cade Brister but he never seemed to be rattled. With a little help from Deon Lewis and the Panthers high-powered option offense, Brister and Zumwalt North fought off a fourth quarter challenge from rival Fort Zumwalt South and rolled to a 42-21 homecoming win Saturday (Sept. 27) at Fort Zumwalt North. CBC stays perfect, rolls over De Smet Jesuit

CBC quarterback Blake Charlton made it happen in the air. Cadets running back Caylen Taylor made it happen on the ground, and the Cadets defense was relentless on Friday night.
