West County high school football preview

It’s almost time to play football again, but the new season brings changes. Gone are the old Suburban West and Suburban South conferences. The new configurations are based on school enrollments, location and sports offered. Parkway Central reached the Class 5 state championship game for the second time last fall. Coach Mark Goldenberg welcomes back five starters on offense and four on defense for his 12th season as the Colts’ head coach. New school year brings conference realignment for West County prep teams

  When the 2014-15 school year kicks off with fall sports later this week, there will be different opponents and different schedules to tackle for West St. Louis County public school sports teams. As part of a massive conference realignment that began back in 2010, schools from West County will have new conference homes in this school year. Boone Valley Golf Club will host 2015 Metropolitan Amateur Championship

The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association has  announced the 2015 Amateur Championship will be conducted July 30 – Aug. 1 at Boone Valley Golf Club.  This will be the silver anniversary of the area’s most prestigious amateur championship and the coveted Jim Tom Blair Trophy. Glotta commits to Austin Peay for basketball

The recruiting process will not continue into the fall for Fort Zumwalt North guard Zach Glotta. Glotta, a standout senior-to-be backcourt player for the Panthers has given a verbal commitment to Ohio Valley Conference member Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tn. Glotta, who spent his summer playing for the Gateway basketball club 17 and under team, will begin his senior season as a four-year starter running the Zumwalt North offense at point guard under the direction of his dad, Coach Charles Glotta. MICDS’ Wellford makes commitment to play lacrosse at Virginia

MICDS midfielder Harry Wellford has made a verbal commitment to play Division I Lacrosse at the University of Virginia. The program is widely-known for its recruiting successes mainly from the East Coast; Wellford is the first St. Louis lacrosse player to commit to an Atlantic Coast Conference school. Desir gets first action in Cleveland preseason opener

  Lindenwood University product Pierre Desir has been working diligently in training camp the past two weeks with the Cleveland Browns. The fourth round pick from Francis Howell Central had his first action just over a week ago in the Browns intersquad scrimmage in Akron, Ohio. St. Charles’ Turner gets picked up by Cubs

Westminster Christian Academy graduate Jacob Turner has a new team to pitch for. The Chicago Cubs acquired Miami Marlins right-hander Jacob Turner, whom they also claimed on waivers. The Marlins received Class-A pitchers Jose Arias and Tyler Bremer in return. Turner will be the latest reclamation project for pitching coach Chris Bosio, joining recently acquired Felix Doubront. The River City Rascals kept hold of their slim lead over the rival Gateway Grizzlies in Frontier League West Division race for another day. On Friday night (Aug. 8) at TR Hughes Ballpark, the host Rascals won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader against the Florence (Ky.) Freedom and then lost the second game for a split. Ballwin’s Migdal will play in U.S. Amateur before turning professional

Ballwin’s Joe Migdal is ready for his swansong as an amateur golfer. Migdal, 23, will begin playing Monday (Aug. 11) in t he U.S. Amateur that runs through Aug. 17 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga. Migdal earned medalist honors in the qualifying at Jefferson City Country Club with the only 36-hole under par total. Weldon ready to play in his second U.S. Amateur

Before he goes back for his senior year at Kansas State, Kyle Weldon will play in his second U.S. Amateur.
