Edwardsville pro Chris Brant captured the ninth Metropolitan Open on Saturday at The Country Club of St. Albans. Starting the final round 3 shots back of three others, Brant closed strong with birdies on 14 and 16 to get to the clubhouse at 5-under and wait for the final groups to complete play. Two rowing camps to learn the sport will be held by St. Louis Rowing Club

The St. Louis Rowing Club will have two upcoming Junior Learn To Row Camps. They are  an introduction to rowing for juniors ages 12 to 17. The session includes 10 lessons over two weeks in both team boats and individual boats. The camps run from July 21–25 and July 28–Aug. 1. The sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. and finish at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $275 per person. It will be held at Creve Coeur Lake in Maryland Heights. Judge rules for firefighters in Monarch lawsuit

A St. Louis County Circuit Court judge has ruled in favor of Monarch Fire Protection District firefighters in a lawsuit filed last year challenging the district board’s failure to make a promotion to captain from those on an existing eligibility list. In a decision entered July 8, Judge Mary Elizabeth Ott ruled the Monarch Board of Directors must promote one of the three firefighter/paramedics on the then-current promotion list to a captain’s position. Ballwin sweeps Manchester, beats Imperial to close regular season as District 10 champs

It was a banner final week of regular season play for the Ballwin Post 611 senior legion baseball team. Ballwin opened the week by sweeping a doubleheader over Manchester on Monday (July 7) and then finished out the week in equally strong fashion with a 13-5 road win over Imperial on Friday (July 11). Cusumano is tied for lead after two rounds of the Metropolitan Open

St. Louis’ Alex Cusumano has a share of the lead Friday (July 11) after two rounds of the ninth annual Metropolitan Open. Cusumano shot a 68 and sits at 135 in the tournament being played at The Country Club of St. Albans. He is tied with two professionals — Jace Long, of Columbia; and Chris Thompson, of Lawrence, Kan. Rams National 7-on-7 team has 18 local football players ready to compete

The St. Louis Rams National 7-on-7 Team finished second last year and this year the squad of 18 local high school football players will attempt to win it all. Team will be coached by St. Louis Rams manager of fan development Kyle Eversgerd and Rams Training Academy Coach Matt Biermann. The Lineman Challenge participants will be coached by St. Louis Rams youth football ambassador Mike Gohn, who is retiring as the athletic director for the Parkway school district. Port outlasts younger competitors, wins ninth women’s state championship

Father Time is not about to catch Ellen Port just yet. Port, 52, won her ninth  Missouri Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship on Thursday at The Golf Club of Creekmoor in Raymore. Port entered the final round of the 54-hole tournament challenged by her younger competitors. Port was tied with Oregon graduate Hanule Seo, of Chesterfield. Northbound I-270 ramp to Dougherty Ferry to close for night work

The Missouri Department of Transportation will close the ramp from northbound I-270 to Dougherty Ferry for five nights, starting Monday, July 14, weather permitting. Crews will close the ramp at 9 p.m. each evening and reopen it by 5 a.m. the following morning. The crews are working on the foundations for sound walls which need to be completed as part of the recent I-270 lane addition project between I-44 and Route 100.

Monarch hires new interim fire chief as district prepares for personnel search

The Monarch Fire Protection District has hired an interim fire chief, while the Board of Directors looks to begin the search for a permanent candidate to that position. Wayne Charles “Chuck” Marsonette was announced as the interim fire chief on June 24. Marsonette had previously worked for West County Fire and EMS from 1997 to 2008, starting as a firefighter/paramedic and eventually working his way up to the position of chief training officer. Don’t look now but eight-time state champion Ellen Port is in good shape to win her ninth title. Port, who is the John Burroughs golf coach, is tied with Chesterfield’s Hanule Seo at 2-under in the Missouri Women’s Golf Association’s Amateur Championship at The Golf Club of Creekmoor in Raymore.
