Baking bread for charity

Students at Ellisville Elementary put their baking skills to the test and donated their creations to two local food pantries. The students were learning, baking and sharing through the King Arthur Flour Bake for Good Program. “The students were proud of themselves for baking a loaf of bread, but also because they helped a family in need,” said fifth-grade teacher Cheryl Hunn. Students used math, science and reading skills to create two loaves of delicious bread – one to keep and one to share. The Parkway West varsity hockey team can do more than skate and shoot the puck. As part of its annual giving back to others, the Longhorns conducted a community service event recently, helping out at Circle Star Ranch, a program of the Erin Eickmeier Foundation. Proposed budget includes city pay increase

City services would remain unchanged, and city employees would receive a pay raise under an $18.8 million budget currently being considered by the Manchester Board of Aldermen. The proposed budget for the year beginning Jan. 1 provides for expenditures  about $900,000 higher than the current fiscal year, according to city budget documents. Revenues, however, are projected to be sufficient to provide for a $300,000 year-end budget surplus, documents show. Most of the spending increase is due to higher bond retirement payments associated with the city’s tax increment financing fund, Finance Director Dave Tuberty said. Boys Basketball preview

It’s time to tip off another high school boys basketball season. CBC won the Class 5 state championship last year and the Cadets’ coach Justin Tatum has two starters back. Tatum is casting his squad as underdogs who will “need to play with a chip on our shoulder” this season. Chaminade will be competing with CBC for supremacy in the Metro Catholic Conference.
