Girls take flight

More than 100 young women from 15 bi-state area high schools learned about future careers in aviation as they participated in the first ever Girls in Aviation Day at St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia, Illinois. Local participating schools with students at Girls in Aviation Day included Parkway North High, Parkway South High Westminster Christian Academy and Villa Duchesne.

Sticking it to the principals

The principals at Hanna Woods Elementary School found themselves in a sticky situation last month. Principal Kristy Roberts and Assistant Principal Debbie Reid were duct taped to a wall. It was a reward for their students who collected 1,200 cans of food for Parkway’s food pantry, more than doubling their 500 can goal over a two-week period.

Former Parkway teacher, coach sentenced to prison

Former Parkway South Middle teacher Ronnie Smith Jr. was sentenced Nov. 1 to five years in prison for charges of statutory rape, sodomy and sexual abuse of a student by a teacher. In September, Smith pleaded guilty to three counts of statutory rape, one count of statutory sodomy and one count of sexual contact with a student by a teacher. The abuse occurred between 2015 and 2017. Smith taught industrial technology at the middle school and was an assistant football coach at South High.  He was arrested on Feb. 6 and terminated by the Parkway School District in April.

Parkway Central Middle band teacher named semifinalist

Parkway Central Middle band teacher, Paul Holzen, was selected as a semifinalist for the 2019 Grammy Music Educator Award. Holzen was chosen as one of 25 semifinalists nationally, out of 2,800 nominations, and the only teacher selected from Missouri.
