Education and Ferguson

The Missouri Constitution, Article IX - Education directs the Missouri Legislature to raise taxes to pay for free K-12 public education. Currently, around $12 billion is paid annually in property, income and sales taxes to fund 500-plus Missouri K-12 public school districts educating over 900,000 students. Unfortunately, too many students, especially urban minorities, do not receive the education they are entitled to get.

College women’s basketball

Saint Louis University sophomore and St. Joseph’s Academy graduate Erin Nelson is a third-team pick for the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. The Ballwin native was selected to the Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball All-Rookie team by a vote of the league’s head coaches in the 2013-2014 season. A 5-10 forward who led the Billikens in scoring last year, Nelson also was a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week, averaging 14 points a game. At St. Joseph’s, Nelson collected four varsity letters and was a McDonald’s All-America nominee as well as a first-team All-State and first-team All-Conference player as a senior.

In November, Fulton School senior Jincy Dunne signed her letter of intent to play Division I ice hockey for The Ohio State University. Daughter of Tom and Tammy Dunne, of O’Fallon, Jincy has attended The Fulton School at St. Albans since she was 3 years old.
